However, police cannot permanently impound a passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only the Passport Authority has the power to impound a passport, as specified in Section 10(3) of the Passports Act, 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Supreme Court in <strong>Suresh Nanda v. CBI<\/strong> declared that police departments have no power to impound passports according to their pronouncement. They can only temporarily seize it; however, they must send it to the Passport Authority for review.
