Hi, I am from Maharashtra and 18 years old. I may score well in my 12th exam and want to pursue college in Mumbai, which is far from my home in Nashik. However, my parents are very possessive and don't trust me, despite being a good and studious student. They refuse to let me live alone in Mumbai just because I am a girl. My dad treats me badly and says he won't send me anywhere alone. I come from a culture-oriented family, and they believe treating girls this way is correct because they think we are immature. They think they are always right, and I feel like I have no other option but to listen to them. They want me to study in Nashik only. I believe I have the potential and dreams, but my safety is a concern, and they won’t let me pursue my career in Mumbai. What should I do?
In this case, you can legally pursue education away from home, but your parents may have the final say if you're still a minor. Once you turn 18, you have legal autonomy, and they cannot stop you from pursuing education. However, consider discussing the matter calmly to address their concerns about safety. Legal action can be taken if needed. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
