Can Nepali citizens open a saving bank account in India?

I am currently living in a PG in Shakarpur, Delhi. I have a passport, but no visa, as it is not required for Nepali citizens under the 1950 Treaty. It is identity proof, not address proof. What can I do to open a bank account in India? Many bank staff are not aware of the 1950 Treaty and face issues with my identity verification. I also do not have a registered or notarized rent agreement for address proof. Even if I arrange one, banks are still hesitant to open an account for Nepali citizens. What should I do in this situation?

Dear Client, You can open a Bank Account in India as a Nepal citizen. You just require your passport, proof address in India. You can open a Resident-Rupee Account in India. You can submit your admission form into the PG as address proof. If they are not accepting your application to open an account, you can try talking to the branch manager about the situation and if that doesn't work, you can approach the RBI seeking remedy. I hope this was helpful. For further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.

As a Nepali citizen, you can open a bank account in India even without a visa. Your passport is valid ID proof, and for address proof, you can give a simple rent agreement or a self-declaration of your PG address, which RBI allows. If the bank refuses, ask for a Small Account or escalate to the Branch Manager or RBI. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
