What should I do if criminal case hearing was missed?

I am seeking legal guidance regarding a criminal complaint pending before the Learned 19th Metropolitan Magistrate, Calcutta, arising out of an old credit card/financial dispute. I currently reside in Mumbai, and due to financial and logistical difficulties, I was unable to personally appear or immediately arrange legal representation when the matter was listed on 14 May 2026. The current online case status shows: • Court: 19th Metropolitan Magistrate, Calcutta • Next Hearing Date: 08.06.2026 • Purpose: “S/A” I would be grateful for guidance on the following: 1. What does “S/A” generally mean at this stage? 2. Since neither I nor any lawyer appeared on the previous date, is that procedurally significant? 3. If I am still unable to arrange a lawyer by 08 June due to financial constraints, what would be the safest procedural step to protect my legal rights?

“S/A” usually refers to a procedural stage fixed by the Magistrate and may become important if the accused remains absent repeatedly. Since neither you nor your lawyer appeared earlier, the court may take a stricter view if absence continues. If you cannot arrange a lawyer immediately, the safest step is to either personally appear on the next date or send an exemption application through any local advocate/legal aid counsel explaining your financial difficulty. You can also seek free legal aid through DLSA to avoid adverse orders such as warrant issuance. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
