Can the court require me to pay my husband after divorce?
I am a 39-year-old woman from India, working in Sweden since April 2023. I married my husband in September 2022. We got married for a spouse visa as I secured a job in Sweden, and my husband decided to leave his job and look for work after we moved here. We were facing problems in our marriage because his mother used to abuse me, and he never stood up for me. He finally left me for her in June 2024. He also suffers from a rare brain disease, which he did not disclose before marriage. I believe he married me with false information for financial gain. He is still not working and is finding it difficult to find a job due to his medical condition. I want to file for divorce, but I do not want to pay him my hard-earned money because of his betrayal and lies. Can the court make me pay him money?
Ma’am, if you file for divorce, the court may consider both parties' financial situations and needs. Since your husband is not working due to his medical condition, the court might award him alimony, but it will depend on the circumstances. However, if he married you under false pretenses, it could impact the divorce proceedings.
