Can court marriage be done directly without cultural ceremony?
Hello Sir, I am currently residing in New Zealand and have been a permanent resident there for the past two years. I want to come to India, specifically Punjab, to get married through a court marriage. I do not wish to have a traditional Sikh marriage and only want legal marriage documentation. After the court marriage, I plan to apply for a partner visa for my spouse to join me in New Zealand. Is it possible to obtain a court marriage certificate without a cultural marriage? Can court marriage be done directly without any traditional ceremony?
Yes, you can directly do court marriage in India without any cultural or religious ceremony by marrying under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. This Act allows a purely legal marriage irrespective of religion. However, it requires a 30-day public notice and physical presence in India. After registration, the court marriage certificate is fully valid for New Zealand partner visa purposes. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
