What if local groups threatens couple and family for inter religion marriage?

We are a couple seeking to get married under the Special Marriage Act. I (30, male) am a non-practicing Muslim (atheist), and my partner (29, female) is Hindu. Both our parents and relatives support our relationship. I belong to Solapur district, Maharashtra, and she belongs to Satara district, Maharashtra. I approached the Sub-Registrar office in Solapur for information, but was told that such marriages are not performed there. On inquiry with agents nearby, I learned that local groups interfere, contact families, and threaten couples to withdraw marriage notices. How do we navigate this situation legally?

Under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, any adult couple can marry without family consent. Marriage officers cannot refuse registration. If local interference or threats occur, you can approach the District Magistrate or High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution of India for police protection and safe registration. Any obstruction by third parties is illegal. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
