What is process of court marriage under Special Marriage Act, 1954?

We are planning a love marriage in April under the Special Marriage Act, even though we are both Hindu. I want to do this first so that we can later perform a proper Hindu-style marriage ceremony. So, I would like to know how we can proceed with this. I understand that there are certain document requirements, and one of us is currently living abroad with the original documents.

You can solemnize your marriage under the Special Marriage Act by submitting a notice of intended marriage to the Marriage Officer of the district where either of you has been residing for at least 30 days. After completion of the notice period and verification, the marriage can be registered. Since your partner is currently abroad, he/she will need to come to India for the purpose of solemnization. Thereafter, you are free to perform a Hindu-style ceremonial marriage as well. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
