What legal protection exists for couples facing threats over marriage?

My girlfriend and I love each other and want to get married and live together. My family agrees with our relationship, but her family does not. They are forcing her to marry someone else, and her brother is threatening me. I am also worried about my family’s safety. What should I do?

Dear client, In case both of you are adults, you do have the right to be married. You can be married under the Special Act of marriage, 1954, as well as protection by the police in case there are threats. If criminal intimidation is perpetrated by an individual, you may complain to the police on the basis of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 so as to protect your and your family's lives. If you have any query please feel free to contact us.
