Can I file a police complaint for harassment and torture?

I (working as employee in govt.) was married in 2015 with a manager level bank employee. I have baby boy of age 4 years. My parents gave gold items as per marriage rituals in our community. After some time, they started quarreling with me. Everyday started abusing me for small things and harassing me and my husband has been silent all the time. During my delivery my mother got serious illness and after my delivery she left the world. He beat me during one of the last rituals of my mother. Since marriage I have given 8 lacs to them. Meanwhile his siter also have FIR with her husband living with us and she also torture me. I have also caught my husband chatting with some girls but he told me that he will not do this in future. I was tolerating this thing as I don't have my mother and my brother and sister living in different state and my father is also senior citizen. Can I file a police complaint from my hometown? What IPC I can File? What will be consequence's?

Yes, you can indeed file a police complaint about harassment and abuse faced if you go back to the place where you stay when this incident happened. You may invoke Section 498A of the IPC that speaks of the definition of 'cruelty by husband or relatives of husband' and along with Section 3 Dowry Prohibition Act whenever applicable. Such violations are punished with imprisonment as high as three years while fine also can be accompanied. You can also claim protection under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. There are various remedies like protection orders and monetary relief available under this act. You should consult a lawyer for proper guidance in the matter.
