How can I recover money lost in a UPI fraud?
On 25th May, I received two SMS messages from HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank stating that ₹10,000 and ₹13,900 had been transferred to an unknown person using my UPI PIN and mobile number. I immediately called 1930, and the police traced the fraudster's details, including his Bank of India account number. However, on the same day, the money was transferred to a State Bank of India account in Erode and was withdrawn through a cheque. The banks have raised a chargeback request with NPCI, but the police have not registered an FIR despite it being a clear case of fraud. What should I do now to recover my money as quickly as possible?
Since the fraud was reported immediately and the fraudster has been identified, submit a written request for FIR registration. If the police refuse, approach the Superintendent of Police under Section 173(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, or the Magistrate. Continue following up with the banks and NPCI regarding the chargeback process. For further legal assiatance contact us on our helpline number.
