How to change surname after marriage?

I have only my first name on all my documents. I now want to add my husband’s surname as my last name. I have recently registered my marriage and obtained the marriage certificate. What is the legal process to update my name in all official records?

Dear Client, Since you have a marriage certificate, you can generally use it to add your husband's surname in your Aadhaar, Passport, PAN, Voter ID, bank records, and other documents. The procedure varies for each document, but the marriage certificate is commonly accepted as proof. Hope this helps you, and please do not hesitate to reach out for further queries.

After marriage, you may legally add your husband’s surname by executing a name change affidavit, publishing the change in newspapers, and completing Gazette publication. Thereafter, your name can be updated in government IDs individually through the respective authorities using these documents. For further legal assistance, contact us on our helpline number.
