What legal action can be taken against online payment fraud?

I am a freelancer who bids on projects through a freelancing platform. A person, who later introduced himself as a broker, posted a project on which I also placed a bid. He shared a text file containing an email address and requested that I contact him via email. After I emailed him, he provided a Telegram ID, and all further communication took place on Telegram. On Telegram, he offered a deal whereby he would create a new project on the freelancing platform worth ₹16,000, divided into two milestones: the first milestone of ₹3,000 and the second milestone of ₹13,000. In return, he asked me to transfer ₹2,000 for the first milestone and ₹10,000 for the second milestone through UPI to a QR code he shared on Telegram. He stated that both parties would receive positive reviews on the platform. After one day, the freelancer reversed the platform transaction and received a refund of his amount. I have since requested the return of the ₹12,000 that I transferred, but he has refused to return the money and is instead insisting that I participate in another deal, claiming that he will repay me through that transaction. What legal remedies are available to recover my money and take action against this person?

If the person took ₹12,000 from you and is refusing to return it, this may constitute online fraud or cheating. Keep all evidence, including Telegram chats, emails, UPI payment receipts, and transaction details. You should immediately file a complaint with the local police and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Do not send any additional money or enter into further deals with the person.
