Does the court marriage require pheras and mangalsutra?
I am from Mumbai and me and my partner who is in Singapore want to do a court marriage in February 2025 so I can go to Singapore and the actual marriage with all the rituals will be performed in November 2025. Does the court marriage in February require pheras and mangalsutra? And how much time does it take to complete the court marriage?
A court marriage in February 2025 does not require pheras or a mangalsutra because it is a civil ceremony conducted under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. These types of marriages are more about legal recognition than the traditions or rituals. It typically takes 30 to 60 days. First, you have to lodge a notice of intended marriage that is posted for 30 days in case there are objections. After no objections have occurred, the marriage can then be solemnized shortly after this period and the couple receives a marriage certificate recognized by law.
For your court marriage in February 2025, no pheras and mangalsutra are needed. A court marriage is a legal wedding ceremony that is performed before a marriage registrar and some witnesses, where the legal rights of the marriage are considered but not the cultural practices. The marriage process at the court level lasts around 30-40 days, just because there is a mandatory notice period lasting 30 days during which marriage intention is put up for public notice. If no objections are raised, you can go ahead and register your marriage shortly afterward.
