Can a Muslim holding an SC certificate claim SC reservation?
I am a Muslim Teli from Himachal Pradesh and am confused about my caste status. The Teli caste appears in the Scheduled Caste (SC) list of Himachal Pradesh without any religion-specific mention, and I also possess a valid SC certificate that has been verified through the HP e-District portal. However, I understand that under certain rules, Muslims may not be eligible for SC status. I am planning to apply under the state quota during NEET counselling and would like to know whether I legally belong to the SC category or the OBC category. Please clarify.
Your category cannot be determined solely on the basis of a caste certificate or community name. In India, Scheduled Caste status is governed by the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, as amended. Eligibility may depend on both the notified caste and the applicable legal provisions regarding religion. you should obtain clarification from the competent caste-certifying authority in Himachal Pradesh For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
