Can an adult woman seek protection against forced marriage by parents?

Sir, I am a 25-year-old woman from Jaipur, and I am financially independent. My parents are forcing me to get married against my wishes. I do not want to marry and instead wish to live independently by renting a room in Jaipur. I am afraid that if I inform my family about my decision, they may prevent me from leaving the house, physically harm me, forcibly bring me back, or compel me to marry against my will. I would like to know what legal protection is available to me. Can I inform the police in advance that I am leaving home of my own free will? What legal steps should I take to ensure my safety and prevent my family from forcing me to return home or marry against my wishes?

If you are 25 years old, you are legally an adult and have the right to decide where you live and whether or not to marry. If you fear harm or unlawful restraint, you may submit a written representation to the local police stating that you are leaving home voluntarily. If your family threatens, assaults, or forcibly confines you, you may immediately seek police protection and, if necessary, approach the High Court for appropriate relief to protect your liberty and safety.
