Can I claim rights in my father's property due to contributions?

I have a property that is registered in my father's name. My father has struggled with alcoholism since I was sixteen years old. During that time, I worked hard to support my family. I ensured that my younger siblings received a proper education, and I personally repaid the family's loans and debts from my own salary. Despite my sacrifices and financial contributions, my parents are now attempting to transfer the entire property to my younger brother without involving me. I believe this is unfair, as I played a significant role in supporting the family financially and maintaining the property. What legal rights and remedies are available to me in these circumstances?

Dear Client, Merely contributing financially towards your family, repaying loans or maintaining the property does not automatically give you ownership rights in property standing in your father's name. If the property is your father's self-acquired property, he is generally free to transfer it to any person of his choice. However, if the property is ancestral or you have any independent legal right in it, the position may be different. Your financial contributions may become relevant only if there was a specific agreement or some other legal basis for claiming a right in the property. A local lawyer can examine the property documents and advise you on the appropriate legal remedy, if any.

If the property is self-acquired and exclusively owned by your father, he generally has the legal right to transfer it to any person of his choice during his lifetime. However, if you contributed money towards repaying loans, maintaining the property, or improving it, preserve all documentary evidence such as bank records and receipts. Depending on the facts, you may be able to seek appropriate civil remedies to establish your financial contribution or claim reimbursement, if legally sustainable.
