What can I do if someone is blackmailing me?
Sir, I was talking to a guy in January, but later I found out he was not good. I stopped talking to him, but now he’s blackmailing me for the last 15-20 days. What should I do?
Dear Client, if a person is blackmailing or threatening you after you stopped communicating with him, you should save all messages, screenshots, call records, and other evidence. Depending on the nature of the threats, the conduct may amount to criminal intimidation under Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other offences may also be attracted based on the facts. You can file a complaint with the local police and provide the evidence you have. If the threats are being made through social media, messaging apps, email, or other online platforms, you may also report the matter through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Do not delete any communications, as they may be important evidence in any investigation. Please contact us for further help. Thank you.
Blackmail is a criminal offence under Section 384 IPC. You should immediately file a police complaint and provide evidence of the blackmail. The police can register an FIR and take action. If the person continues to harass you, you may also seek a restraining order from the court. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
