Why change surname after marriage, and is it mandatory?

I already have a marriage certificate. My name before marriage was Chitrada Padma Priya, and I did not change my surname in the certificate. However, now, after three years, my family is insisting that I change my surname to match my husband's. I would like to understand the legal process and whether this is mandatory.

Dear Client, No. Changing surname after marriage is not a mandatory requirement under any of the personal laws in India. It is something done out of self-discretion by couples after marriage. If you want to change your surname, you must execute an affidavit for the same, publish the change in name, in a national and a regional newspaper, and lastly, notify the change in the official Gazette of your state (this is enough to make the changes in your official documents). I hope this answer helps. In case of future queries, please feel free to contact us. Thank you.

Changing your surname after marriage is not mandatory, but if you wish to do so, create a notarized affidavit, publish the name change in a newspaper, and apply for a gazette notification. After that, you can update your new name on official documents. The process takes about 2 to 4 weeks. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
