Can an adult woman seek protection against forced marriage by parents?

Sir, I am a 25-year-old woman from Jaipur, and I am financially independent. My parents are forcing me to get married against my wishes. I do not want to marry and instead wish to live independently by renting a room in Jaipur. I am afraid that if I inform my family about my decision, they may prevent me from leaving the house, physically harm me, forcibly bring me back, or compel me to marry against my will. I would like to know what legal protection is available to me. Can I inform the police in advance that I am leaving home of my own free will? What legal steps should I take to ensure my safety and prevent my family from forcing me to return home or marry against my wishes?

Dear Client, since you are an adult, you have the legal right to decide whether or not to marry and where you wish to live. No one, including your parents, can force you to marry against your will or unlawfully stop you from leaving home. If you fear for your safety, you may give a written intimation to the local police stating that you are leaving home voluntarily and request protection if needed. If there is a genuine threat to your safety or liberty, you may also approach the appropriate court for protection. Keep copies of your complaint and any evidence of threats or harassment. Hope this helps. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any further queries or need assistance.

Dear Client, as a 25-year-old adult, you have full legal control, so you are free on your own terms. You should file a written complaint at your local police station, and tell them clearly about your voluntary exit, like what you decided. After that, approach the District Court, then ask for a protective order under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005. Also, remember your fundamental claim regarding personal freedom is protected by Article 21 of the Constitution of India. If you need anything more, feel free to reach us at Prime Legal.

If you are 25 years old, you are legally an adult and have the right to decide where you live and whether or not to marry. If you fear harm or unlawful restraint, you may submit a written representation to the local police stating that you are leaving home voluntarily. If your family threatens, assaults, or forcibly confines you, you may immediately seek police protection and, if necessary, approach the High Court for appropriate relief to protect your liberty and safety.
