Am I responsible for my son's debts as a senior citizen?

My son has become addicted to gambling and taken personal and credit card loans from 14 lenders amounting to ₹40 lakhs. Last year, he took about ₹50 lakhs and we, including his wife and I, cleared that using all our savings. We informed some banks not to lend him more due to his addiction. Despite psychiatric treatment, he relapsed and took more loans. He is now jobless, divorced, and in rehab. Now lenders are harassing me to repay. I am a senior citizen and a widow. Am I legally responsible for my son's debts? Please advise.

As a senior citizen and widow, you are generally not liable for your son’s personal loans unless you co-signed them. However, if the loans were taken in your name or you provided guarantees, you could be held responsible. Seek advice from a lawyer to determine your legal obligations and how to handle harassment.
