Can someone file a defamation case over private WhatsApp messages?

I was previously in a relationship (not engagement or marriage, just a mutually agreed relationship) with a girl. Due to problems in the relationship, we broke up. I told 3-4 friends through WhatsApp chats that I wasn’t happy in the relationship, and at times, it felt a bit abusive (which I truly felt). I also "backbitched" about her nature and character a little. Considering I’ve already apologized for criticizing her, can she potentially file a defamation case against me? Nothing derogatory was said publicly, only some venting and criticism shared with my friends through personal WhatsApp chats to get rid of my mental frustration.

Sir, defamation typically involves public statements that harm someone’s reputation. Since your comments were made in private WhatsApp chats to friends, it's unlikely to be considered defamation. Your apology for criticizing her shows you're taking responsibility. If she does pursue legal action, consult a lawyer who specializes in defamation law for specific advice. In the future, avoid sharing negative comments privately or publicly to prevent misunderstandings or legal complications. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
