What can female employees do against workplace verbal abuse?
Hello Sir, I am a 45-year-old female working in an office. One of my seniors called me into his cabin for a meeting regarding shifting my workplace outside the office. During our conversation, he used abusive language toward me. I did not use any bad words or insult him. I simply said that I would resign and then left the cabin. What action can I take for being verbally abused as a female employee in the cabin? Is there any law to protect women in such cases?
Dear Client, As a female employee you are protected under the POSH Act, 2013, which allows you to file a complaint before your office’s Internal Committee against any unwelcome, humiliating, or abusive conduct by a senior, if there is no ICC you can alos approach the LCC, that is that Local Complaints Committee and apart from this you may also pursue action under service rules or even criminal provisions such as Section 509 IPC (insulting the modesty of a woman) or Section 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) if threats were involved, so you should immediately make a written complaint to HR/IC and, if the abuse was serious, also consider lodging an FIR to safeguard your rights. I hope this answer helps. For further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Verbal abuse or inappropriate behavior at work is serious. You can file a complaint with your office's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) under the POSH Act. If no ICC exists, you can approach the Local Complaints Committee or file a police complaint. The law protects women from harassment or abuse at the workplace.
