Can a debt collector threaten police involvement to pressure payment?

A debt collector came to my house asking for money I couldn’t pay. He is warning me to go to the police station and settle the matter. Can he do that, or is it just to pressure me?

A debt collector cannot force you to go to the police station. However, if the debt is legitimate, they may file a case against you for recovery. If they threaten or harass you, it is advisable to file a complaint with the police under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), such as harassment or extortion.
