What legal steps can I take to stop forced marriage?
My family members want to force me to get married, but I don’t want to marry yet, and they are not listening to me. I am being abused and beaten. I also sought help from the SHO (police) of my area, but he did not help me. I sought help from the SP of Dholpur, but he also did not help. I was poisoned for seeking help from the police, but due to fear of the police, they took me to the hospital. I also filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women on 30/12/2024. But no one has helped me yet. I am supposed to marry next month in March. It is difficult for me to even run away from home. What should I do? Please tell me.
You should immediately approach the District Magistrate or a local court and seek protection under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and the Indian Penal Code which criminalizes forced marriage and domestic violence. Since the police have not helped, file a writ petition in the High Court for protection and urgent intervention. You can also contact NGOs or women’s rights groups that provide legal and shelter assistance. If you are in immediate danger, call the National Women’s Helpline or approach the nearest legal aid authority for urgent help.
