Is it legal for a shop to charge handling fees?

I purchased granite and tiles from a shop, and they additionally charged Rs. 1,660 as a handling charge. Is this legal or illegal?

Dear client, as per your query, Yes, shops can legally charge handling fees, but it also depends upon the context, they must be clearly disclosed and represent actual costs, and not be imposed illegally so transparency and legitimacy are key, and whether you agreed to it, or if your consent was taken. I hope this answer was helpful. For further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.

Handling charges can be legally charged in India. The only fact that makes the same illegal is consumer awareness with respect to the charges. Therefore, the handling charges become illegal if you were not aware or did not agree to the same when the sale was entered upon.

If the shop charged you an extra handling fee without informing you beforehand, it may be considered unfair under the Consumer Protection Act. If it was clearly mentioned before the purchase, it might be valid. So, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Forum. It is advised to consult an expert lawyer who will assist you with the best course of action. For further legal assistance contact us on our helpline number.
